MUSIC

A FEW WORDS OF INTRODUCTION

“We are shaped by what we love.”
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

In my music, you will be able to identify here and there some sources of inspiration and influences, more or less revised and corrected, not only coming from the sphere of the so-called “classical” music (of course I’m not going to deny where I come from!) with great models like Ravel, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Chostakovich, Bartok, Debussy, Dutilleux … but also frequent intrusions to other musical horizons (contemporary music, film music, jazz, funk, pop music, world music, …). In short, a great variety of different universes united under the same skies! In my opinion, classical music and popular music ate not irreconcilable worlds. Music first!

In terms of musical composition, I would say that I write modestly what I want to hear, quite simply (but it is not that simple!) I try to preserve my freedom of thought, without putting myself barriers of an ideological nature or hiding behind great academic principles! We can not be 100% completely independent. Any musical language comes from somewhere, then it evolves along a trajectory that follows the discoveries, the research and the decisions of the composer.

Ethymologically speaking, composing comes from the Latin componere which means “placing, putting together”, and as such, the choices of the composer are the only thing that matters when writing a note or a chord on a white sheet. Unless we live on a desert island, we can not remain indifferent to everything around us or remain completely untouched by our musical experiences, in a more or less conscious way. There are great principles in the music writing process that can be applied by everyone (we study writing, analysis, orchestration …) but nobody can tell about creating.

I like to remember a thought by Mr. Croche, alias Claude Debussy, a little phrase that sounds like a joke, but for me, it says a lot:

“Do not listen to anyone’s advice, except the sound of the wind that passes   and tells us the story of the world.”
