Claude DEBUSSY: La Cathédrale engloutie
                arrangement for symphony orchestra

La Cathédrale engloutie is one of Claude Debussy’s most famous pieces for piano and remains one of my favorite works from all the piano repertoire of all periods and styles. La Cathédrale engloutie was published in 1910 and is one of the 24 Preludes written by Claude Debussy for solo piano between December 1909 and April 1913. This is the tenth prelude of the series and it is part of the first volume of the two volumes of twelve preludes of the composer.

I did this orchestration in 2005. La Cathédrale engloutie is performed by the Orchestre des lauréats du Conservatoire conducted by Guillaume Bourgogne.

Claude DEBUSSY: En blanc et noir – 3rd movement (Scherzando)
                arrangement for symphony orchestra

Composed in 1915, En blanc et noir is among the latest compositions by Claude Debussy. Marked by the declaration of war in August 1914, the composer reveals through his latest works his patriotic fervor by signing now “Claude Debussy, French musician”. It is a work for two pianos in three movements. According to the composer, the three pieces “want to draw their color, their emotion from the simple piano”, such as the “gray” of Velasquez.

The third movement Scherzando is dedicated “To my friend Igor Stravinsky” and bears the inscription “Yver, you are only a villain”, a verse borrowed from Charles of Orleans already set to music by Debussy in his Three songs of Charles of Orleans (1908).

I did this orchestration in 2007. This last Scherzando movement of En blanc et noir is performed by the Orchestre des lauréats du Conservatoire conducted by Claire Levacher.

Emmanuel CHABRIER: Scherzo-valse
                arrangement for wind orchestra

Composed for solo piano in 1881 by Emmanuel Chabrier, the Scherzo-valse is the last piece of the Dix pièces pittoresques. I did this arrangement for wind orchestra in 2007. I voluntarily transposed the original score a semitone lower to have tones that sound better with the instruments of the wind orchestra.

The Scherzo-Valse is played here by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix under the direction of Philippe Ferro.
